Cricket Australia today expressed its condolences at the passing of one of its former directors and team managers, Mr. John “Jack” Edwards, who died yesterday, aged 74.

Cricket Australia Chairman Bob Merriman said Mr. Edwards was a gentleman of the game and made a valuable contribution to administration at club, state and national level.

“Jack Edwards was a highly respected member of the cricket community who made a significant contribution to the game at every level,” said Mr. Merriman.

“Jack served Cricket Australia as Chairman of its programming committee and manger of the successful West Indies tour in 1995 and the tour to Sharjah in 1994.

“He also served as President of Cricket Victoria and chaired the organising committee for the championship of cricket in 1985, which saw the construction of the light towers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

“He was a man of great honour and esteem, and we express our sincere sympathies to his wife Angela and the Edwards family.”

A leading figure in cricket administration, particularly in Victoria through his roles with the St Kilda Cricket Club and as a delegate with the Victorian Cricket Association, Mr. Edwards became a director of the Australian Cricket Board in 1984 until his retirement in 1997.
